Noordwester was established in 1917 and started distributing every week on Fridays at Calvinia in the North Western Cape. Later on in 1995, Oewernuus was established – covering the towns of Prieska, Marydale and Niekerkshoop. The demand from local readers grew for both publications and Noordwester extended their distribution to also cover the areas of Oewernuus. Eventually the two papers were joined together hence the name Noordwester/Oewernuus. Presently this publication covers a huge area in Northern Cape.
